Essentially, the above evidence leads to one primary reason - Equality.
Should marriage really be defined as a relationship solely between a man and woman ? There have been no concrete facts as to why same-sex marriage shouldnt be legalised. Those opposing such an act are basing their assumptions on opinion and stereo-types.
Yes, there are Civil Unions, but they are not adequate. In the U.S, plaintiffs back up their case of fighting for gay marriage by referring to the Plessy vs Ferguson case of 1896, which justified racial segregation under a deplorable standard of "Seperate but Equal". One could argue that this is a prime analogy for gay couples to use as a form for both gender segregation and sex discrimination. Not only this, but a civil union is neither universally recognised nor understood, clearly holding an inferior status to that of a marriage. To say that a Civil Union is equal to a marriage would be a lie.

intersting topic to choose. its difficult to say my own opinion on this topic. because either side you stand you face some sort of opposition. love should be available to all but marriage in its original and intended form was for a man and a woman specifically. so i cant say
ReplyDeleteagreed with Laurene on an interseting topic, so many people to offend. I'm all about equality, so if a man and a man or a woman and a woman want to get married they should, and it shouldnt be called a civil union it should be called a marriage/wedding. Everyone has there own right to be with whoever they choose and be treated no different. I like this topic :)
ReplyDeleteGreat points discussed and info to back them up!
ReplyDeleteFrom my point of view, well, I think that marriage was for a man and for a woman. Being brought up in the christian religion, marriage is pretty important and that it should be between a man and a woman..
and yes, love should be for all like Laurene said.
Great job on this essay though! :)
I think gay people are super! So sure, if they wanna get married, let them get married. Not sure if they should be allowed kids though, cause it could be kinda unfair on the kid, being dropped off by two gay men at school every day. I mean, what if they pashed in front of everyone? Lol. That would be funny.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I don't mean to make fun of gay people here, and I think prejudice is wrong and all. But the sad fact is that prejudice is out there, especially in schools. And it seems kinda unfair to expect some kid to go off and face that stuff at school every day. Unless the kid is also gay, and really wants to be adopted by Steve and Michael. I guess then its ok. As long as there's some kinda choice for the kid. I don't know, very loaded topic. Nice blog anyhow!
